Morning came all too quickly for the pair. Despite how they fought the break of dawn, all they could do was savor the night as the rich darkness began to fade to gray.

When the daylight became stronger, Kasai found them and prompted Cain to make his escape in a portal of her conjuring. Reluctantly he obliged and departed as Diana watched, on the verge of tears despite his protests. When he had gone, she returned to her den to sulk, oblivious to Kasai's attempts at consolation. This is where Velan found them that melancholy morning.

"Good morning, my love," he greeted cheerfully, completely ignoring Kasai as he strolled into the clearing. No answer came from Diana. "Good morning," he repeated, slightly more forceful.

She sighed. "good morning, Velan," she murmured sullenly.

"Still upset, are you, about Latybalt's murder by that awful Shiroke boy?" he asked. "Never fear, my moon - his punishment was just and cruel, as it should be. That whelp shall never torment us again."

Diana buried her head in the leaves, hiding her returned tears beneath her arms.

"However, it still troubles me that I can not say the same for the rest of the Shiroke pack," Velan continued. "The Alpha's children are gone, yes, but there are still many 'wolves that ally with them. We need all the strength that we can procure. You do remember what I requested of you, my dear? About becoming my Alphess and my mate?"

Diana lifted her head, staring up at him without expression. He blinked in surprise, for she was meeting his eyes, and under normal circumstances this would have been considered a challenge. She held his gaze for several moments, then finally began to speak in a calm, slow voice.

"Velan, I refuse your so-called 'love' and your offer to become the Alphess of Shadowed Moon Pack. In fact, I wish to leave this pack, and hopefully never return. I do not owe you anything, and if you are so desperate -"

His clawed hand struck her across her face with lightning speed. "You dare deny your Alpha, and insult him as well?" Velan snarled dangerously, his muddy eyes glowering. "Do you know what I do to the faes in my pack if they ever have the audacity to step out of line?"

Diana glared up at him. "Kill them?"

His eyes narrowed. "You only wish." He became a wolf and leapt at her.

A blast of lavender magic sent him flying off course; he landed easily on his feet and lunged suddenly at the vampiress with dead-on accuracy.

"KASAI!!" Diana screamed.

Velan pinned Kasai face-down with his teeth at her throat. "Well, my pet?" he spat. "What do you say now?"

"No...," Diana gasped. "You wouldn't..."

"I see no reason not to." His eyes glimmered with a resolve that verified his words.

"You can't..."

"I most certainly can."

She shook her head and stepped forward to stop him, and he placed his jaws around the vampire's neck. Diana backed off, beginning to shake as she met her friend's terrified eyes.

"It doesn't have to be this way, Diana," Velan told her softly. "You don't have to fight me. It's so much easier if you don't fight."

"No...I can't...." She tried to find a way out of this, but her mind was paralyzed. She worked desperately to created a loophole, but she couldn't think. What she did realize was that even if he killed Kasai, he'd either kill her as well or force her to be Alphess anyway.

Finally Diana relented. "Fine. I'll be your Alphess. Just let her go." I'm sorry, Cain. There nothing I could do. I'm so sorry.

She hung her head as Velan became human and stepped away from Kasai, who stood quickly and withdrew to the side of the clearing. The Shadowed Moon Alpha chuckled darkly. "I knew you'd see it my way. It may not be as awful as you seem to foresee. You may even grow to like being my mate." he turned to leave. "I - or shall I say we - shall announce our betrothal to the pack tomorrow." Looking over his shoulder at Diana, he added, "I assure you, my love, there is nothing you need regret about this."

When he had gone, Diana fell to her knees, already regretting everything. "I can't believe I just did that. I can't believe I gave in! How could I have done that, Kasai? How could I..."

"You know, maybe it actually won't be so bad...," she replied, sitting down on the stump.

Diana looked slowly up at her. "What?" she asked softly.

"I mean, he already treats you better than any of the other faes. It could only get better if you're his mate. And Cain's kind of a lost cause anyway, so...."

Diana stared at her friend as though seeing her for the first time. "What are you saying?"

Kasai sighed. "I'm saying that maybe you should give up on Cain and try living with Velan."

The werewolf stood up. "I thought you were my friend." Then she disappeared into the forest without another word.

Scene thirteen of my Romeo and Juliet rewrite, the Tragedy of Diana and Cain.

I have to say, this is one of my favorite scene of TDC. Not because Kasai almost gets killed (D8), or because I writing isn't that great, but just the stuff that happens. I had so much fun torturing Diana in this scene, hehe....

Oh, and look! Velan's back. Haven't seen him in a long time.

I'm still not sure about that last thing that Diana says. At the time it sounded great, but now I think it just sounds selfish. :/

As usual, tell me if you see any typos. I didn't scan over this one. :/
